Auto Insurance Carriers Offering Rebates in Response to COVID-19

Auto Insurance Carriers Offering Rebates in Response to COVID-19

As people respond to "Safer-At-Home" and other mandates, personal vehicles sit parked in driveways and garages, more likely to suffer a dead battery than be involved in a collision. The auto insurance carriers are taking notice and offering customers rebates on their premiums.

Listed below is a summary of the programs being offered by various carriers with whom LBW places business. This list will be updated as we procure more information from carrier websites and receive additional updates from our reps. In many cases, clients do NOT need to contact their agent or carrier to receive the rebates - most rebate programs are being triggered automatically. See the list below to find your carrier and what they're offering:

Chubb

  • Chubb is providing its personal auto insurance clients in the U.S. with a credit on annual renewal premiums as a result of reduced driving activity. Upon renewal, clients will receive a credit reflecting a 35% premium reduction for the months of April and May, with additional discounts for subsequent months, as the situation warrants. Across Chubb's portfolio, the average credit is expected to be $110 per vehicle. Clients will not have to request the credit; it will be applied automatically at renewal. All premium and rate adjustments are subject to regulatory approval.

Mercury

  • Mercury will give 15% of monthly premiums back to customers in April and May 2020. This applies to all California Private Passenger Automobile customers.

NatGen -

  • NatGen will provide a 15% premium credit for the month of April 2020. This credit will be applied to the insureds' next installment bill, or for paid in full customers, returned to them in a mailed check. Policyholders do not need to take any action to receive the credit.
  • Special note for CA: "We are continuing to understand our options for CA policyholders. We will send a state-specific communication to our agents that write business in CA when we can confirm our actionable plan."
  • Waiving physical damage deductibles for healthcare providers through 2020. This includes doctors, nurses and EMTs.
  • Providing flexible payment options, implementing grace periods and waiving fees for customers who are in need. Specific timeframes and actions may vary by state.
  • Encouraging agents to make adjustments to policies to reflect clients' current usage, with the trust that they will be made again to align with life changes.

Nationwide -

  • Many customers are currently experiencing hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To get relief in the hands of Nationwide customers quickly and simply, they are offering a one-time premium refund of $50 per policy for personal auto policies active as of March 31, 2020. The premium refund and timing are subject to individual state regulatory approval.

Progressive -

  • If you have an active personal auto policy at the end of April or May, you will be receiving a 20% premium credit. There is nothing you need to do. Progressive will calculate your credit for you at the end of that month, and you’ll see it in your Progressive account a few weeks after that. It’s all automatic— they plan to provide you a confirmation message when each credit is in your account.
  • To receive a credit of 20% of your April premium, your personal auto policy must be active at the end of April. Similarly, to receive a credit of 20% of your May premium, your personal auto policy must be active at the end of May.
  • Progressive will calculate your credit within a few weeks of the end of April and May. You’ll receive your credit shortly after that.
  • Once they’ve calculated the credit for your policy, they’ll automatically apply it to any outstanding balance or your next bill. And if you’re already paid in full, they’ll return the credit amount directly to your payment account or issue you a check.

PURE -

  • PURE is offering a Reduced Miles Refund to all members with regular auto policies. Subject to regulatory approval in each respective state, PURE will provide a 15% credit on all regular auto premiums for the period of time from the introduction of state stay-at-home orders until they are lifted, up to 4 months. As the stays are lifted, these credits will be paid in cash or applied to reduce any outstanding balance due to PURE. Note that, because their premiums for Classic Cars already reflect the low-to-no mileage of these vehicles, this credit will not be applied to Classic Cars.

Safeco

  • Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15% refund of two months of their annual auto premium as of April 7, 2020, pending regulatory approval.
  • The refunds will begin in April and will be issued either by check or in the manner the customer made their most recent payment.
  • The payments will happen automatically. Customers do not need to call Safeco to receive the refund.

The Hartford

  • 15% refund on April and May personal auto insurance premiums. The company intends to issue refunds over the next two months to all personal auto insurance customers with policies in force as of April 1, 2020.
  • The refunds will be made by check or direct deposit into the account the customer used to pay their bill.
  • No action is needed from customers, the refund will occur automatically.
  • The Hartford has waived late payments and cancellation for non-payment for all its personal auto and home customers until May 31, 2020.

Travelers –

  • Giving U.S. personal auto insurance customers a 15% credit on their April and May premiums.
  • Suspending cancellation and nonrenewal of coverage due to nonpayment through May 15, 2020 (no interest, late fees or penalties will be charged).
